Actually, after 2 games out of 4, I’ve come to the conclusion that the post-Japanese parts are not so much bad Quiet Hills as they are simply crooked and bad games. Let’s fix that in our heads and move on. Despite all the controversy, Silent Hill Homecoming is more often than not considered a piece of software code instead of a continuation of the legendary SH part (Which, I personally think is only partially fair, but come on). Konami, having understood that, promptly folded their partnership with Double Helix, after which Helix slowly wringed its neck, remembering the old days and making games based on movies (movies weren’t very good there, so I’m not going to say anything about games). Along the way Double Helix managed to get into the Front Mission universe and Killer Instinct.

That’s how one story of the studio, which had stolen the great and terrible Silent Hill, ended and another one continued. In fact, Double Helix was once again replaced by Climax, which in its respite from Foggy Town made three games with a score of 60 out of 100 on metacritic. These games are probably hidden industry masterpieces, and you don’t even know their names. Such a masterpiece seems to be Shattered Memories, well, or not. Let’s refresh our memories and figure it out.

Climax did manage to make a remake of the first part of Silent Hill, but this time it looks like the developers really wanted to make an unusual game and not even on the most usual platform. A strange vibe was felt from the first trailer, this time, indeed, snow-covered Silent Hill, Harry Mason running in the dark, looking for his daughter Cheryl again. The city’s backside was no longer covered in rust, pockmarked with tight pieces of flesh, and there was no longer a sense of horror in it all. Rather a kind of melancholy, sadness, that’s the mood that hovered throughout the game, it was influenced by the music, the environment, and the storytelling.

Shattered Memories has the most distinctive music of all the past parts of the series. Akira Yamaoka and Mary Elizabeth McGinn seem to have stayed true to what we’re used to and have come to love, but there’s a chill and slow lingering expectation of the exceptionally bad from their compositions. The atmosphere puts you in a trance and there’s a kind of special vibe when the out-of-town guys open up their snowy expanses. Of something similar, the Coen Brothers Fargo and Fear X Refn come to my mind.

Since the game came out on WII with its beautiful, interactive nunchucks, most of the puzzles here are just built around the fact that we have to open some lockers, twirl objects in our hands, unscrew bolts and do these kinds of interactive tasks ourselves. The game had a segment I particularly liked, where you have to hack into the school computer by answering secret questions to reset the password, we actually have the computer and two rooms at our disposal. All the information you need is just in these rooms, and you have to look for it yourself, not by pressing a separate button to examine a specific item, but straight with your own eyes to examine the surroundings. And, as I understand it, the objects to look for change depending on the results in Kaufman’s tests.

In Shattered Memories, there are sort of two kinds of astral trails of some kind. One we track by radio interference and when we catch up, something in the environment changes, conventionally speaking, if the interference led us to a picture, there will be a flash with a nasty sound, the picture will fall to the floor and we will remotely hear a dialogue between people who are not really there, which carries optional creepy stories, sometimes you need to find 2 or 3 such traces for the complete picture. I won’t give you examples so as not to take away from the content if you do decide to go through this part. I’ll just say that such mini-stories are very addictive. The second type of astral trails is the same search for radio interference, with the only difference that the tracking leads to ghostly silhouettes, which must be photographed on Harry’s phone, after which he will receive an audio message with the same, not particularly encouraging content.

Unlike the wimpy, triple-chewed Origins here, Climax actually made for an interesting experience, referencing the original first part. Yes, the gameplay came out controversial, but the game is also pretty short, so the occasional run-through just begins to tire and lo and behold, the adventure comes to an end, beautifully revealing the final twist. Shattered Memories proved to be a more personal story, while Origins and Homecoming tried only to mimic one, as if to cram the main characters’ woes with their heads for a tick, trying to flirt with the second Silent Hill. The game deliberately places the player in a seemingly familiar world and plot, then immediately begins to confuse him and throw in completely wild things that neither the player nor Harry can believe. The metagame works, the experiment is rather successful, its place in the heart of the game clearly deserves.

I’m going to start a little bit from afar. I’m a big fan of slashers, especially the Devil May Cry and Bayonetta series. Been through every part of each of these two series of games and several times. Was even able to knock out an S rank in Devil May Cry 5: SE for Virgil on the Legendary Dark Knight difficulty. I mean, yes, I really like slashers. But still, back to Bayonetta 3.

Graphics, performance and locations
And I’ll probably start with one of the weakest parts of this game – the graphics. In my personal feeling, the ports of earlier Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 to the Nintendo Switch were winning in some ways in terms of graphics. Yes, there may not have been as many locations and not as many polygons, but the poor quality of the sprites, even in the chapter selection menu, is very striking. Here’s a screenshot from that menu:

The quality of both the dart hand itself and the chapter labels themselves are extremely poor. The first impression was not very pleasant at the sight of this.

The graphics in the game itself are not so striking, especially in handheld mode, as most of the time we still see highly detailed characters and you can only pick on some artifacts in the background during sharp camera turns. And then, this nuance noticed not me, but a friend who was watching the game, when I quickly moved around the location outside of combat.

The locations themselves in Bayonetta 3 are made under the stylistics of different times, cities and eras. From ancient Egypt to Paris with a slight touch of steampunk. All the locations are different and very colorful, but I personally did not have what it was in the previous parts of the series, namely the very identity and colorful.

The performance is on a very decent level and almost always produces a stable 60 FPS during combat, which is extremely important for games of this genre. There are drawdowns (I can’t give exact numbers as I have no FPS-meter on my switch), but they are extremely insignificant and appear in most cases when switching from “mini-missions” to the normal game and vice versa.

The story in Bayonetta 3… is. It’s just there, and for the most part you only remember it in the last 2-3 missions. The plot of the game is that a certain villain called Singularity is destroying the worlds in the multiverse to make them merge into one Alpha-world, where he will rule. To defeat him the heroes need to collect five Chaos Mechanisms, find Doctor Sigurd and get into this Alpha world to destroy the Singularity.

And that is, in fact, the entire plot almost to the end of the game. I may not have been following the storyline so much myself, but it seems to me there are a lot of plot holes, incomprehensibility and logical inconsistencies. You can watch how the story ends on YouTube or just pass the game, which I highly recommend to do (not because of the story).

Bayonetta has always been famous for its hurricane fights, endless combos and awesome executions. But Platinum Games decided to slightly change the arsenal and the way the weapons themselves work.

Earlier in Bayonetta we could equip the protagonist with two weapons at once: on arms and legs. Also we could have 2 sets of weapons and switch between them during the battle. Weapons were not upgraded, but certain abilities, such as turning into bats at the very last moment when dodging an enemy attack for a longer Witch Time we had to buy in the “Hell Gate” shop/bar from the demon Rodin for the Nimbas we received during the battle with angels.

In part 3 they kept the idea of switching between sets, but the sets themselves now do not have the ability to change the top and bottom to different types of weapons. But greatly increased the arsenal itself and different kinds of skills. Now each individual weapon and its demon must be pumped separately for the crystals received for performing combos.

Changed another mechanic. Now instead of Climax ability, which was an analogue of Devil Trigger from Devil May Cry 5, we control 3 demons at once, and you can switch between them during the battle. Summoning demons can be done by using the magic scale and they can help to destroy some enemies’ shields, knock them out and just quickly dispose of them. But during the summoning and control of the demons Bayonetta becomes vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy, because it cannot move and attack itself, although this point can be corrected by buying a small earring in the store at Rodin. In addition to the usual summoning, at the end of some combos you can summon a selected demon, which can attack unsuspecting enemies, giving even more damage to them.

Battles with enemies have become much more dynamic and, in part, more tactical thanks to the introduction of demon mechanics. And isn’t it cool to destroy homunculi with a huge clock tower that shoots rockets, turn into a small mech and finish them off with a fire spider-scorpion (hello from Devil May Cry 1)?

The fourth Resident Evil can be called a legend already because of the history of its creation. Six years of production hell is usually an unequivocal verdict for a game. But Capcom team still managed to figure out their ideals and concepts and released the finished product in 2005. Not just ready, but good enough. And not just good, but revolutionary for the series, for the horror genre and the entire industry in general. Just for a second: what kind of horror games are we waiting for in the near future? Dead Space remake, Silent Hill 2 remake, The Calisto Protocol, Alan Wake 2 – all of these games came courtesy of Resident Evil 4.

I’m going to reveal the reasons for the greatness, and like in the last time, one game innovation will naturally lead to another one, and we’ll make the whole picture, and then, in the epilogue, we’ll reflect a little bit. So, the starting point of all the game’s gameplay design decisions has been mentioned many times, but it’s a little harder to trace its impact than it seems. That’s where we’ll start, and then you’ll see how one decision twisted all the pillars of Resident Evil.

You probably heard that the main feature of Resident Evil 4 is the shoulder view. It replaces the fixed camera that worked like a surveillance system. The reduced visibility and a certain sense of voyeurism worked well for the atmosphere, but the reasons for this decision were purely technical – in the mid-nineties Capcom were not able to work with 3D-graphics, and a moving camera would have burned that all your surroundings – are the flat prendered textures. For the record, Shinji Mikami generally wanted to make the original Resident a first-person game.

In the mid noughties this approach looked more than archaic, but on the PS2 generation the industry and especially the Japanese were just learning how to work with two joysticks. Therefore, on the background of the same MGS 2 looked more progressive in appearance Splinter Cell, made by all the canons of modern third-person games. By the way, in the main mode the camera was quietly swiveling at a distance from Sam Fisher, but when aiming just translated over the shoulder of the hero. Mikami and his team fixed this view for the entire game. Why? Well, first of all, because now they could do so, and secondly for immersion – from an outside observer you turn into a witness and participant in the events taking place on the screen. You don’t even have to resort to cutscenes to create spectacular moments – you can see everything with your own eyes. In fact, this view was a compromise between first person and third person: the player looks in the same direction as the hero, fully controlling the process of aiming, and at the same time sees his character and visually reads his movements, as well as the surrounding environment.

The innovation turned out to be so breakthrough that it essentially created the genre of third-person action games – Gears of War, the founding father of shooters with cover and roll-ups, was already released in 2006 and its developers openly say where they spotted such a convenient camera position. And that’s it. Kane & Lynch, GTA, Batman, Mass Effect, Fallout, Spec Ops, The Last of Us, Watch Dogs, and so on down the list. Even the rival Silent Hill switched to the new camera. By the way the shelters also appeared in the fourth Resident, albeit in an embryonic form, but that’s another conversation.

For now, let’s concentrate on the game itself in a vacuum. So, thanks to the new camera, Resident Evil players for the first time could decide for themselves where to direct their gaze. That means, goodbye prender – now every location has to be rendered in honest 3D. The developers could have easily stopped on the 3D corridors, but they went further. The next revolution made by the fourth Resident Evil is the interaction with the environment.

Let’s remember how classic Resident Evil worked: you have a hero, you have a location and… that’s it. From there there are only two options – you can either pick up an item lying around the location or fight the enemy in it. The doors are animated portals between the parts of the map, and the different levers and buttons become interactive only after the activation of the script in the pop-up window. The revolutionary interactivity of Half-Life is still out of the question, although that’s a conversation for the next libretto. That is, look: even in the graphically breakthrough remake of the first part, if we remove the beautiful backdrops, then left a bare corridor, where the only interactive object will be a zombie – well, at most a statue that the hero can move the fixed jerks.

Now take a look at the fourth part. Each of its locations is more like a playground: smash windows, jump into windows, put ladders to houses, pick boxes with a knife, shoot at crows, bypass traps and stretch marks – all these elements of the gameplay outside of combat. The first big battle with los zombis will have you barricading doors, throwing enemies down ladders, blowing up red barrels (okay, that’s for later) – at some point the game will even have shelter segments. It works like shit, of course, but it’s a fact.
